IPX is the most popular network format when IBM PCs are connected together. The CONFIG button on this screen lets you choose a network SOCKET NUMBER. Everyone who wants to play together should select the same socker number. Don't worry too much about what the number means. (The guy with the reflectometer can check out the HELP info for the CONFIG dialog box if he is concerned), just make sure everybody uses the same socket number. Each socket number can be thought of as a separate card table. If your internet access provider gives you a 'shell' account, then you should use the NetSpades MODEM option instead, to connect to that shell account, and then ask the shell to telnet to your final destination.However, if you have a PPP or SLIP account, with WINSOCK loaded on your computer, then you can cut out the middle step and make telnet connections directly from NetSpades to the internet host of your choice.Çšu†~- (€5 €œ€‚€€‚‚ÿFor now, Netspades only supports the ability to telnet to a host, not directly to another copy of NetSpades. The host would accept calls from multiple copies of NetSpades and mix them together. This service is available today via a GAME CONNECTION located on the cris.com host. Other hosts will no doubt become available over time, so keep your eyes open for the best deal and the best performance.Do you HAVE WINSOCK?Well, if you have a PPP/SLIP account with an internet provider (such as the Microsoft Network), you have WINSOCK installed on your computer. However, some network providers bend the rules a little and use a proprietary protocol for dialup access. If you use one of these (The Netcom Netcruiser account is a good example), then you are out of luck until Netcom comes around to doing things the right way. Which would be really easy for them to do, by the way, so they're idiots if they resist the inevitable. No offense, Netcom (even if my Netcom shell account DOES suck, frequently crashes, often becomes unidirectional, and just generally delievers an extremely unsatisfying level of service.) Maybe YOUR experience with Netcom has been better.rE·ˆ À- (€‹€œ€‚€€‚‚ÿAnyway, if you have WINSOCK installed, NetSpades will find it. If it doesn't find it, you will not be able to use the telnet feature (and it will tell you so.)Starting a Telnet GameIf your computer has WINSOCK and you have a connection up and running to your PPP/SLIP (or other TCP/IP service provider), then you will be able to start a game of NetSpades by following the following steps. But, before I give you the simple steps, let me remind you that you may have to do something to set up your PPP/SLIP connection first. If you do, well, you probably know how already.~ À/†é~"Ã- (€Ó€œ€‚€€‚‚ÿFor most of us, that means clicking on an icon which causes your modem to dial your internet provider and establish a PPP or SLIP connection to the network. Without that, NetSpades will be unable to make TCP/IP connections to your desired telnet host.Selecting TelnetWhen you press the NETWORK button on the main menu, you are taken to the Player Lobby screen. The CONFIG button on this screen lets you choose a network type: IPX or Telnet. It will default to IPX, so before you can use Telnet, you will have to change this configuration to select Telnet instead of IPX. In the worst of all possible worlds, you might have to thereafter exit NetSpades and reenter before your choice takes effect, but that PROBABLY won't be necessary.A ÀcÅ* "€/€œ€€‚‚‚ÿMaking a telnet connectionIf you have selected telnet instead of IPX, the "DIAL" button usually seen on the lobby screen will instead read "TELNET" When you press this button, you will see the normal phone book screen. You will now have two sorts of entries in this phone book (although NetSpades doesn't know which ones are which, so it's up to you to pick a meaningful one).Some entries you may use to hold real phone numbers, and they will have you know, numbers in them. For example: "cris.com" (quotes not needed) is a host which provides a GAME CONNECTION suitable for use with NetSpades. IP addresses can also be entered as 4 numbers separated by periods (as in "123.123.123.123"), so have a blast surfing the internet to find valid host addresses.Chatting before the Game, and HOSTING Once you telnet to a host, you may have to log on to it (which may cost money) and then navigate its menus until you find yourself in some sort of inter-player chat channel. Then you can probably play NetSpades. If the chat channel is a Game Connection, then you know it will work.É£cÅË& €G€œ€‚‚ÿWhile in the Player Lobby, everyone on the same chat channel will see each other's characters as they type on their keyboard. If you have a modem, it will be connected to one of your computer's COM PORTs, and will operate at one of sever BAUD RATES.Configuring Your PC and ModemTo play Spades with a friend over a modem, you will both require: 1.) A computer, running the Windows Operating System 2.) A copy of this program 3.) A Modem, with phone line attached to it¡tÂË’- (€é€œ€‚€€‚‚ÿTo begin, you must each begin running this program under Windows. Push the MODEM button from the main menu. This will open the Player Lobby screen. You should then push the CONFIG button to specify your COM port and BAUD RATE. Once you set these, Net Spades will remember your settings for the next time you play.Calling your FriendWhen you are ready to play, your friend should push the RESET button so that his (or her) modem will answer incoming calls. You should then push your DIåÍ’}ËAL button (you will have to enter your friend's phone number in the phone book, but it will also be remembered for future sessions).Õ¨åÍg- (€Q€œ€‚€€‚‚ÿWhen your modem has dialed your friend's phone number, both modems should begin making squawking noises until they establish a connection between them. You should probably use the same baud rate at both ends. If this is all new to you, you might want to consult the documentation which accompanied your modem. (salaam! xoda fez!)Chatting Before the GameAfter the modems have connected to each other, you and your friend will be able to see each other's keystrokes as you type on the computer keyboard. To see your own keystrokes, turn on the ECHO checkbox at the bottom of the screen.Õ«’<* "€W€œ€€‚‚‚ÿHosting the GameWhen you and your friend can see each other's keystrokes, then you are completely connected and either one of you may press the HOST GAME button to begin your card game. Since there are only two of you, the host of the game (the one who pushed the HOST GAME button), should seat two robots, in addition to the other human, so that all four seats are filled and the game may begin.In fact, you might want to play in Partner mode, with the humans against the 'bots. Or maybe two cyborg teams! Think of your robot partner as a sort of golf handicap. If you're really THAT good of a Spades player, you ought to be able to win with even the dumbest robot, right? ågI( €Ë€œ€€‚ÿEnding/Leaving the GameWhen you are through playing, push the STOP SIGN button on the toolbar to return to the Player Lobby screen. Note that you can leave a game at any time without it disturbing the other players at all. They may replace you with a robot, wait for you to get back, OR... I guess they could seat one of themselves in your chair, long enough to peek at your cards, and then innocently return to their original positions, with you none the wiser after your return.F<1½¤ŠøŒÿÿÿÿúMUsing Game Connection”cI# 1 0€Ç€œ€€‚‚€€‚‚ÿUsing Game ConnectionThe GAME CONNECTION is a software product of Sirius Software. It allows users of MAJOR BBS's to connect several players together into a single room where they may all play the same game. Without some 3rd party like the GAME CONNECTION, you would only be able to play with one other computer.Getting to the Game Connection MenuTo play Net Spades using the GAME CONNECTION, you must first use your modem to dial into a BBS which provides it. This BBS will probably require that you log on with an ID and password (and may charge you a connect fee for every hour you are attached).¿’ @- (€% €œ€‚€€‚‚ÿOnce logged on to the BBS, you will be presented with a menu of commands available to you on that BBS. Somewhere in that menu (hopefully near the top!) will be the GAME CONNECTION. You may have to navigate several menus before you reach the GAME CONNECTION. These navigation commands will vary from BBS to BBS. If you can't find the GAME CONNECTION, you might leave a message for the BBS Sysop, who is sure to be helpful.Picking a Game Connection ChannelWhen you get to the GAME CONNECTION menu, it will give you several commands. The first command you will probably want to use is the 'W' command (who is here?). This will list all the people who are currently using the Game Connection, and which channels they are using. Look for a channel with a name like "Waiting to Play Spades" and use the 'M' commmand to enter that channel. If the name of the channel is something like "Playing Spades" then you are too late, the channel is is locked and no new players may join. If this happens, or if you are the first of your friends to arrive, you should create a new game channel (by using the same 'M' command, but specifying 'S' instead of a channel number).#  @I”j#  B* "€Õ€œ€€‚‚‚ÿOpening a New Game Connection ChannelIf you opt to make a new channel, you will be asked for the name of the game you are going to play on that channel. You may name it anything you like, but you should select something that your friends will recognize when they arrive. Something like: "Incredibly Cool Spades Game from Synthetic Reality"You will also be asked to specify a GAME PROTOCOL. Several flavors will work, but we suggest LINE MODE. You will then be dubbed the MODERATOR of that channel and, as such, will have certain commands available to you. For example, you can kick people out that are rude.sM @E& €›€œ€‚‚ÿAt this point, you just need to sit back and wait for your friends to arrive. As they arrive, you will see a short message notifying you of their presence. You can chat with anyone in the room, merely by typing a sentence on your keyboard, and then pressing ENTER. The game connection will add a snappy header to your message so that everyone can see who said what.When all your friends have arrived, you have two options available to you. You can have an open game, which allows new players to join later, or a closed game which is limited to only those players in the room right now.zQ BG) €£€œ€€‚‚ÿ/Starting a Game Connection ChannelIf you want a closed game, the moderator of the channel should type the command "/start" on a line by itself. This will take everyone in the room out of chat mode and into game mode. To get back out of game mode, you would have to type three control-Zs in rapid succession. You might want to practice /starting and control-Zing over and over again, repeating to yourself: "This has nothing to do with spades. Up to this point I could be playing any game I like. This will allow new spades players to enter a game in progress later on. However, if you choose to play an open game, you must make sure that the Game Connection scroll-lock feature is disabled. Stop when you see the phrase "text will flow continuously" (as opposed to "text will freeze every 24 lines)"Hosting the GameÖGXL- (€-€œ€‚€€‚‚ÿWhen you are ready to begin playing cards, one of you should press the HOST GAME button. So your NetSpades pleasure may be interrupted while using this service. Also, IRC is notoriously unreliable, prone to spontaneous combustion. This situation will presumably get worse, until it gets better. Getting better will undoubtedly be associated with Getting More Expensive.øÍUƒ1‰+ $€›€œ€€‚‚‚‚ÿGetting the Game StartedAgain, the basic algorithm is to give whatever commands are necessary until you and your friends can all see each others messages in a chat channel. At that point, one of you presses the HOST GAME button, seats the other players, and deals the cards.Now, what, may you ask, are the necessary commands?Well, you are going to have to avail yourself of as many forms of help as you have available to you to avail yourself helpfully of... uh... yourself. But if you are the last to bid and everyone else is bidding really high, maybe you got all the wimpy cards. Well, it isn't QUITE that simple, but almost. Basically, as we know, a trick consists of each player selecting a card and placing it on the table. The FIRST card played in the trick selects the LEAD suit. Everyone else has to play cards in the same suit for them to have a chance to win the trick. If hearts are 'lead', then you MUST play a heart (if you have one) and the highest ranking heart wins the trick. If you don't have any cards in the lead suit, then you can play any suit you do have.rEúé - (€‹€œ€‚€€‚‚ÿAnd now we get to the name of the game - Spades. It is called Spades because the suit of Spades is TRUMP. A spade always counts more than any other suit. If someone leads hearts (for example), and you have no hearts, but you DO have some spades, you can play a low spade and still win the trick. (if two or more players play a spade, the high spade wins).Who Takes the TrickSo, for example, let's say three players have played the Ace, King, and Queen of diamonds. You don't have any diamonds. But you DO have the lowly 2 of spades, which you play. YOU win the trick.èw  @& €Ñ€œ€‚‚ÿOn the other hand, if the 2, 3, and 4 of hearts are played, and you have no hearts AND you have no spades, and you play the King of Clubs... well, you do NOT take the trick. (the 4 of hearts would win in this case).Well, I think that's about all the rules except: When can you lead spades? Generally you cannot put down a spade as the first (the lead) card of a trick. However, once someone has been forced to play a spade (because they didn't have any cards in the lead suit, or they had nothing left but spades), then the suit is said to be 'broken' and thereafter anyone can lead spades as if they were any other suit. Just obey any little edicts which appear from time to time.Partner PlayOne of the rules which the host can change is whether you will play as partners, or as individuals (as described above). In Partner play, two pairs of partners play against each other. Partners always sit across from each other at the table. Partner play is usually to 500 points, but the host may select a different target score.J$ @}E& €I€œ€‚‚ÿIn Partner mode, each partner bids separately, seeing only his or her own cards and without any detailed discussion with their partner. Thereafter, however, their bids are considered collectively and the final tricks taken by the partnership is what matters. Hence if one partner bids 2 and the other bids 5, it is only important that, between them, they take a total of 7 tricks, not that the individuals meet their individual bids.Scoring is the same (only using the collective bids and tricks taken) with a single score maintained for each partnership. Unlike Free-For-All, it is possible to lose in partner mode by collecting sufficient negative points. (one half the finish score, in fact.) Turning on this option scrambles the messages enough to make them not-easily read (but they are not fully encrypted, so NetSpades remains exportable :) By the way, I had to change the scramble algorithm used after version 1.1 (because the original one scrambled a bit too well -- I could UNscramble it!) Anyway, if you play a game with people running an old version, they may not be able to read about half of your lowercase letters. To earn my forgiveness, however, is as simple as pushing the "default colors" button, which restores the One True color set.Seriously though, I have found that colors display radically differently on different monitors. So, if the default colors (which look GREAT on my screen) look funny on yours, then please feel free to tune them. Of course! I'm not a color nazi! It still freaks out in a couple cases and the 'punt' intelligence is not very impressive. I kinda like ROOKIE. Also, make sure you have your robots all set to maximum intelligence levels (use the ROBOT EDITOR) so that we can find specific stupid moments in the AI. Remember though, that just like a human player, sometimes the robot just doesn't HAVE any other clubs and didn't really MEAN to play the 2 when you were trying for a NIL and had to play the 5. You can page, etc. You just can't receive pages while you are not visiting the lobby.- ILLEGAL PLAYER bug. Well, wouldn't you know it, turns out there are TWO DIFFERENT BUGS which can be described the same way. One was fixed in beta 1 (spade15) and it was the copy protection logic triggering erroneously when you tried to join a game. The other, it turns out, is a low-level check of player index numner (so that I don't make illegal memory accesses). I was peppering the code with a new subroutine to check for this, and I put it in at least one spot where it didn't belong. I hope I weeded them all out in this version. The symptom to watch out for is a SMALL dialog box which just says "Illegal Player NUmber" instead of going into a little speech asking for money.­ˆº€¦‡% €€œ€‚ÿ- FACE EDITORS. Well, several people have asked for a more free form face editor. To tell you the truth, it isn't the editing which prevents me from providing this, it's the need to move files between players. To avoid re-inventing the wheel, I would put zmodem into the product (which maybe I will do someday). The problem is that the smallest little face which you might free-form design represents a HUGE amount of data (compared to the size of everything else I move around ). Also, it interferes with my emotion buttons. But I hear your plaintive cries! In the meantime, please suggest more facial components for the existing editor.iù„6‹' €Ó€œ€‚‚‚ÿ- New USER PREFERENCES. Check them out. See if you can understand what each one does. Basiclaly they let you customize certain sound and graphics options, including the display of your own cards in ascending order versus descending. (See, sometimes I come through for you!) Well, I put an end to that recently.- This version should be playable in the GC lobby, and on IRC. I shrank the packets back down to a manageable size. IRC itself is still a bit unreliable, though. It tends to lock up for seconds at a time, and then to dump you sporadically. Periodically VISIT LOBBY if you think the game has gotten screwed up by IRC. I added some more diagnostics and found that my own 486/66 was dropping data at 19.2K Keep your eye open for "Bad Packet" messages in the chat box. If you get a lot of them (and your game should act funny after each one), try using a lower baud rate (will require re-logging into CRIS). People with "fifo-ed' uarts probably will not have this problem. Spades is not tolerant of communications errors. Players should be able to get a resync from the game host by leaving the game and then re-joining. I'll think (very little ) about making this more robust, but in the meantime, try a lower baud rate, it won't affect the play of the game at all to run at 9600 (or even 2400 probably!) instead of 38400.qJ¼' €•€œ€‚‚‚ÿIn any case, keep your eyes open for "BAD PACKET" messages and report any you see (along with whether or not the game started acting funny around that point).CODE NUMBERSYou should have each received your Personal Activation Code. However, there are no more resource violations reported by Windows, so if it happens again, there is no convenient excuse.Also, somebody once reported that their sounds "stopped playing" There is a code word to disable sounds ("soundoff" I think), and a new, undocumented feature in SPADE9 (the "note" button on the left part of the toolbar). When the note button is depressed, sounds are enabled. Only WAV files are used, and only via the Windows sound driver.
